Ian Dunwoodie – Principal
As a property lawyer over the last 33 years, there are not many things that Ian hasn’t seen or legal problems that he hasn’t been able to find a solution for. Ian has served as a member of the Property Law Committee of the Law Society of NSW from 1997-2000, and has been for many years a regular presenter and chairperson at APAC, AALC, AALCDC and Legalwise conferences. Since 2012 Ian has also practiced as a Notary Public.
Ian commenced practice in 1981 and worked for the next 16 years in large and medium sized national and international law firms, gaining a wealth of experience in high value commercial and government related legal matters and major property development projects. Ian worked for a time as the Senior Property Lawyer at the Maritime Services Board dealing with high worth public, commercial, industrial and residential waterfront property with wharves hosting major port and commercial infrastructure in Sydney Harbour, Port Botany, Port Kembla and Newcastle.
In 1997 Ian established the CBD property law firm of I C Dunwoodie & Associates and in 2001 the practice merged with a long established Double Bay legal practice to form the firm which is now Dunwoodie Legal and moved to Edgecliff in the commercial heart of Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs.
Dunwoodie Legal has a tight knit, friendly, and accomplished team and since its inception has proudly recruited and trained young lawyers who have gone on to become highly successful employees in large firms, government enterprise, as Judges associates and international legal practice.
Dunwoodie Legal continues to provide quality legal advice to private clients, high net worth individuals, corporations, both in Australia and overseas, and discerning clients on a wide range of property related personal and commercial matters, the legal aspects of wealth management, trusts, wills, estates and superannuation, often working closely with real estate and financial advisers to provide a full range of practical business, commercial, personal and development related legal services.
Kate Donnan – Lawyer
I joined Dunwoodie Legal as a legal secretary in 2010 whilst undertaking a combined law and finance degree at UTS. Initially, my workload comprised of mostly reception and administrative duties but has increased greatly over the past seven years.
Given that I have the privilege of working one on one with a principal solicitor, my skill set, knowledge and experience have been widened immensely. Under Ian’s guidance, I have drafted wills, contracts for sale of land and business, leases and various other legal documents. I have also had the opportunity to deal with a wide range of clients with varying needs and assist Ian with solving their problems with my legal research skills.
I undertook the practical experience component of my Practical Legal Training under the supervision of Ian Dunwoodie.
Since July 2014 I worked full time as Ian’s paralegal and started to take on more responsibility, develop client relationships and refine my legal skills.
As of February 2017, I am a lawyer at Dunwoodie Legal and focus on complex estate planning, self-managed superannuation funds, as well as other more general matters.
